Back in school, break time was the only window for kids to do whatever they wanted with zero interference from the teacher, leave alone the principal. The principal would only come for a surprise check or to announce something important. But things are a little different in this school in China. A primary school principal, 40-year-old Zhang Pengfei, believes in doing things a little differently. In what most are calling a bold move, Pengfei has opted for a modern dance routine over the government's daily exercise program.
He joins students during break time and ensures that even that period is utilised well. He joins the students outside and together they do the 'guibu,' or ghost steps – a shuffle dance incorporating modern jazz steps.
“This is just a small activity at our school – I just wanted to offer a different way to exercise during the class break,” Pengfei told a local media organization.
A video of the principal leading a shuffle dance in China's Shanxi province has gone viral on social media.

Considering this is happening in a small primary school in China, it's not a small deal. Schools in China usually have students working out to their daily callisthenics routine. It's a tough workout, that since 1951, has been a compulsory part of every school's daily agenda.
But Pengfei makes it sound like it's no big deal. Saying that he and his 700 pupils needed a change, he said, “I wanted to introduce the [shuffle] dance... because the students and [teachers] had no interest at all in the broadcast callisthenics.”
As could be expected, there was opposition from other teachers “because the music is full of energy," like Pengfei puts it. But he did got support from where he expected it least, social media and now Mr. Pengfei shows no signs of worry.
