A cardigan worn by American singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain six months before his death which was never been washed has been sold at an auction for $489,000.

A cardigan worn by American singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain six months before his death which was never been washed has been sold at an auction for $489,000.The iconic piece of clothing was worn by Nirvana lead singer during MTV Unplugged performance six months before his death. According to the reports, the cardigan has dark stains, a missing button, a cigarette burn on the front side of it and smells bad.

Kletjan last bought the cardigan

It has now become the most expensive cardigan ever sold, according to the reports. When it was sold for the last time, it fetched $201,000.The cardigan was last bought by Garrett Kletjian, owner of Forty7 Motorsports four years ago for $137,500. Kletjian said that during the years he owned the cardigan, he only wore it once and that was for less than 40 seconds. He further added that it's kind of weird putting someone else's clothes. Kurt wore the olive green button-up cardigan for his MTV Unplugged performance recorded less than six months before he died in 1994 and the item has not been washed since he owned it. The acoustic performance was released after his death and has become one of the most renowned and popular performances of his career.

Julien’s Auctions sold the cardigan. It had initially been predicted to be sold between $200,000 to $300,000 but ultimately crossed the estimate. Kurt Donald Cobain was an American singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the guitarist and frontman of the rock band Nirvana. He is remembered as one of the most iconic and influential rock musicians in the history of alternative music. Nirvana found success with Smells Like Teen Spirit from their second album Nevermind (1991).  He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Nirvana bandmates Dave Grohl and Novoselic, in their first year of eligibility in 2014. He was ranked 7th by MTV in the 22 Greatest Voices in Music. In 2006, he was placed 20th by Hit Parader on their list of the "100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time".
