South Korea to develop anti-drone system to thwart North Korea UAVs

South Korea is looking to develop a weapon system to thwart any drone attack. Incidents of infiltration by North Korean spy drones has led to this development.

After deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THA), an anti-ballistic missile system, South Korea is w looking to develop a weapon system to thwart any drone attack. South Korea’s defence procurement ncy said that it is rey to invest $74 million in order to develop system by 2023. alleged incidents of infiltration by rth Korean spy drones has led to this development. anti-drone weapon system will be able to track and destroy small drones and or aircraft.

‘Block-I' to take on drones

“We aim to improve system so that it will ultimately be capable of intercepting a fighter jet and satellite,” Song Chang-joon, a senior official at Defense Acquisition Program ministration (DAPA), said in a statement. system, nicknamed Block-I, will apparently lock invisible optical fibre razors on a target at close range. South Korea has been wary of rth Korea’s series of missile tests and it forced country to deploy THA as defence measures.

South Korean officials h said that a rth Korean drone was found in 2017 on ir side in demilitarized zone. officials also claimed that around 550 photographs of THA were recovered from built-in camera of drone. According to South Korean military, a rth Korean drone h crashed during a reconnaissance mission in 2014. mission allegedly included taking pictures of South Korea’s presidential Blue House while flying directly over it.

China yet to react

Earlier, THA deployment h riled up China as it h claimed that anti-ballistic missile system will be misused by United States for spying on it. China retaliated with ufficial sanctions against South. Later, Seoul agreed to accept military constraints in exchange for lifting sanctions. Seoul agreed that re will be furr anti-ballistic missile systems in South and re will be military alliance involving Korea, US and Japan. It is yet to be seen what will be China’s reaction to South Korea’s new weapon system.
