Coronavirus: Spain overtakes China's death toll with 3,434 fatalities

Authorities in Spain ramped up testing as number of cases depicted a 20 percent increase on the figures as of March 25, while the death toll jumped 27 percent.

Spain has reportedly overtaken China in death toll as it recorded 3,434 deaths amid  unprecedented lockdown to try and rein in COVID-19 epidemic as it entered 11th day of outbreak and infected over 47,610 people, health ministry confirmed. At least 738 fatalities have been recorded in past 24 hours. 

According to reports, authorities in Spain ramped up testing as number of cases depicted a 20 per cent increase on figures as of March 25, while death toll showed a 27 per cent spike. Despite national lockdown imposed on March 14 in Italy, which has been extended until April 11, fatalities and cases have continued to soar unabated. officials have warned that situation is expected to get worse in weeks ahe.

Country approaching peak

ministry’s emergency coordinator Fernando Simon said in a news conference that country was approaching peak. y furr elaborated that it would be ascertained wher lockdown was having desired effect after peak phase passed. With hospitals on brink of collapse due to surge in patients, security forces have set up a massive field hospital in Mrid’s vast IFEMA exhibition center which currently has 1,500 beds, as per reports. It could be expanded to take in up to 5,500 people — making it largest hospital in Spain.

Spain's Health Minister Salvor Illa was quoted saying that authorities were stockpiling protection gear, breathing apparatus and quick COVID-19 tests in an attempt to prepare for onslaught of new cases expected in near future. Spanish authorities tell public that staying home is best way to beat coronavirus pandemic, as per media reports.
