Study: Asteroid that led to extinction of dinosaurs hit at 'deadliest possible' angle

In new research, astromers have found that asteroid which led to extinction of disaurs 66 million years ago hit Earth at "deliest possible" angle, at 200-kilometer (125 miles) Chicxulub crater in present-day Mexico. Led by Professor Gareth Collins, an astromer at Imperial College London in Department of Earth Science and Engineering, and his team of researchers, study was published in scientific journal, Nature Communications. It revealed  trajectory and direction of impact of asteroid on Earth.  

study in  peer-reviewed journal revealed that gigantic asteroid struck at an angle of about 60 degrees, reby maximizing amount of climate-changing gases thrust into upper atmosphere. Furr, it unleashed billions of tons of sulphur into atmosphere, blocking sun, and causing a nuclear winter that solely wiped out existence of disaurs and overall 75 percent of life on Earth. Examining shape of Chicxulub meteorite crater in Mexico, researchers studied “ initial impact to moment final crater in first-ever fully 3D simulations that reproduced whole event.”

Furr, Collins revealed, upper layers of earth around Chicxulub crater contained high amounts of water, porous carbonate and evaporite rocks. So, refore, when struck by asteroid, vast amounts of carbon dioxide, sulfur, and water vapor released into atmosphere.  

sulphur would have been particularly hazardous as it rapidly forms aerosols – tiny particles that would have blocked sun’s rays, halting photosynsis in plants and rapidly cooling climate. This eventually contributed to mass extinction event that killed 75 per cent of life on Earth, Collins said in study. 

Didn't hit vertical

As per study, if asteroid came straight overhe, it would be more of a glancing blow, and less rock would have been vaporized comparatively. However,  66 Ma asteroid came in 60 degrees, which is ideal for hurling vapour into air, as per astromers’ key findings from study.
