Researchers have found that coronavirus in bats h circulated for deces, without people realizing it. A new study published by Nature Microbiology states that scientists do t kw exact origin of SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, but horseshoe bats are most plausible hosts.

origin of virus has been centre of debate since pandemic began with many scientists attributing it to bats and pangolins. Last month, world health organisation (WHO) sent a team of experts to Chinese mainland to investigate origin after US officials stoked speculations that it escaped from a Chinese lab. Tracing virus line is crucial early in outbreak because it would allow authorities to separate people from animal hosting pathogen.

Potential to spre in humans

In study, researchers from Pennsylvania State University Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics warned that virus line in bats could have potential to spre in humans.  However, y found that pangolins probably did t act as a host but might have played a role in touching off pandemic by transmitting it. research team reconstructed virus’s evolution by tracing its recombination history.

“ findings highlight how difficult it will be to identify viruses with potential to cause major human outbreaks before y emerge. This underscores need for a global network of real-time human disease surveillance systems," y wrote in paper.
