Taiwan laid the foundation for a free trade deal with the United States on August 28 as it announced easing off restrictions on beef and pork from the US.

This development came when Taiwan is hoping to strengn its ties with Washington amid growing tensions with China. China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has recently stepped up its threats to use force to annex it if it deems necessary.

Taiwan improves ties with United States
Reports suggest that Taiwan h paved its way for a free tre agreement with United States. However, Washington complained about barriers to access for US pork and beef. Taiwan gave an explanation saying y h taken this step due to health reasons with concerns over m cow disease. President Tsai Ing-wen reportedly said that government h planned to allow import of US pork which contains ractopamine. She furr said that decision was taken in respect with country's overall interests and goals of nation’s strategic development. Talking about Taiwan’s relationship with US, she said, US is an "extremely important" tre partner for Taiwan and decision has thing to do with upcoming US presidential election.

China has protested recent moves by U.S. to boost government and military contacts with Taiwan by staging war games. Beijing's Defense Ministry was quoted saying, “necessary move responding to current security situation in Taiwan Strait and were meant to safeguard national sovereignty”. According to reports, Taiwan and US’ tre last year was worth $85.5 billion. Out of which United States was running a $23.1 billion deficit. Taiwan was United States` 14th biggest export market in year 2019.
