Pro-democracy protesters in Thailand pushed through several sets of police barricades on Wednesday as they sought to take their grievances to Government House, the seat of the Thai government.

Several thousand demonstrators calling for fresh elections, a new constitution and an end to the harassment of activists had earlier gathered at Democracy Monument before marching.

Some of them also have an agenda to reform the monarchy, usually considered above criticism, and protected by strict anti-defamation laws.

Anti-government protests briefly clashed with yellow-shirted pro-monarchists at Democracy Monument and the tense atmosphere remained as they headed for their destination, with groups of their opponents hurling abuse at them as they walked.

Police gave minimal resistance as protesters brushed aside their barriers, but then blocked their route with a line of buses, close to Government House.

Demonstrators say they will camp out for three days in an attempt to make their demands heard.
