The Tibetan government-in-exile has thanked the United States after the introduction of a resolution in Congress commending the spiritual leader, Dalai Lama for his contribution to global peace and non – violence on November 17. The resolution was introduced by Congressman Ted Yoho and was co-sponsored by Michael McCaul, Chris Smith, and George McGovern on November 14 to acknowledge the significance of the genuine autonomy of Tibet as well as the Tibetan people along with the work done by Dalai Lama to promote global peace, harmony, and understanding.

TG Arya, spokesperson of the Tibetan government-in-exile said, "I am very thankful to the government of the United States and the House of Representatives as they have proposed a resolution for us. Right now, China has imposed dictatorship in the country and because of their trade and economic power, they try to influence many countries and stop others by saying things against China. So, in that way, it is a very strong message to China that they should behave properly.”

Cultural and religious significance

The resolution passed by US Congress recognises the cultural and religious significance of Tibet which is genuinely autonomous and the strong bond shared between the people of the US and Tibet. The resolution further lauds the 14th Dalai Lama for his commitment to non-violence and global peace. It also determines that benefits convene a bipartisan, bicameral forum, either through a Joint Meeting of Congress, a teleconference broadcast in the Auditorium at the Capitol Visitor Centre, or just a roundtable between the US lawmakers and His Holiness the Dalai Lama to discuss the peaceful solutions for the matters of international conflicts.

China urges the US to stop interfering

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reportedly condemned the meet and urged the US to stop contacting the Dalai Lama clique, making "irresponsible remarks" and also using issues related to Tibet in order to get into the internal affairs of China. China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said that US Ambassador's remarks have violated the commitment of the US to recognise Tibet as a part of China and not support Tibetan independence. Rejecting the US’ assertion to select the next Dalai Lama by the Tibetan people, China said its approval is a must for choosing the next successor. Sam Brownback had hit out at China saying the Tibetan people have the right to choose their own religious leaders.
