Six tourists have been arrested and are facing a jail term for reportedly damaging and defecating in Machu Picchu. The six tourists were arrested on Sunday.

According to Peru's local media, six tourists are being investigated by public ministry for ir alleged crime against cultural herit. Cusco regional police chief Wilbert Leyva told local media that human waste was found at temple, which is being investigated as evidence tourists defecated on historical site. police said that a hole in ground was discovered which might have been caused by a lithic element that h fallen from a wall.

According to reports, group consisted of one tourist from France, two from Brazil and Argentina respectively, one from Chile and y were all d between 20 and 32. He of Archaeological National Park of Machu Picchu, Jose Bastante has urged police to speed up investigation and punish those guilty for dam. According to Peruvian law, people guilty of damaging cultural herit are given a sentence of four years. Bastante also anunced that CCTV will be put up at site to prevent future incidents of this nature.

This is t first time that tourists have faced backlash, in past, accoeding to reports, authorities have hit back at visitors who posed naked at sacred temple. Four United States citizens were arrested in March 2014 for taking off ir clos before posing for a photo. In same week, ar incident was reported where two Canians and two Australian tourists posed naked at temple and were later arrested by Peruvian police.
