Trudeau announces new plan for 'made-in-Canada' COVID-19 vaccine as cases surge

Canian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on October 23 anunced an investment of up to $173 million through Strategic Invation Fund (SIF) in Quebec City based Medicago. This comes as a measure by Cana to battle vel coronavirus as it surpasses 200,000 cases. entire process is valued at an amount of $428 million and it is said to vance Medicago’s virus-like particle vaccine which is developed on company’s unique plant-based production platform.

Trudeau said in a statement, “Today’s anuncement is a testament to Cana’s commitment to evidence-based solutions to fight global COVID-19 pandemic. As we continue to safely restart our ecomy, we will do whatever it takes to protect Canians from COVID-19 and build a country that is healthier and safer for everyone. This is why we are supporting our biomanufacturing sector, through companies like Medicago and Precision NaSystems, to develop a reliable, me-in-Cana vaccine”. government has also reached an agreement to reserve 76 million doses of vaccine. This amount is eugh to vaccinate 38 million people.

As per press release, government is also planning to invest in a Vancouver-based biotechlogy company Precision NaSystems Incorporated (PNI) through SIF. government will be contributing an amount of $18.2 million. press release furr stated, “ government is also providing up to $23.2 million in funding through National Research Council of Cana Industrial Research Assistance Program to vance six COVID-19 vaccine candidates in various sts of clinical trials”.

Canian government has alrey signed agreements with Medicago, AstraZeneca, Safi and GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, vavax, Pfizer, and Moderna. Minister of Invation, Science and Industry, Hon. Navdeep Bains said, “Our government is continuing to man impacts of pandemic, while preparing for future waves. Today’s investment is helping Canian companies PNI and Medicago vance Me-in-Cana vaccine candidates recommended by COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force, and supporting researchers and companies that are helping in fight against this pandemic. This is all part of our government’s continued commitment to protect health and safety of all Canians”.
