Trudeau looks to Biden for help in dispute with China

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday China’s attempt at coercive diplomacy by imprisoning two Canadians in retaliation for the arrest of a top Huawei executive isn’t working and he expects President-elect Joe Biden administration’s to be a good partner in convincing Beijing to release them.

Canian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday China’s attempt at coercive diplomacy by imprisoning two Canians in retaliation for arrest of a top Huawei executive isn’t working and he expects President-elect Joe Biden ministration’s to be a good partner in convincing Beijing to release m.

Beijing arrested former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor in December 2018 just days after Cana arrested Meng Wanzhou, a Chinese Huawei executive and daughter of company’s founder.

U.S. is seeking Meng’s extrition on fraud charges and her extrition case is before Canian courts. Her arrest severely damd relations between China and Cana. China has also sentenced two or Canians to death and suspended cala imports.

“ir approach of coercive diplomacy is ineffective,” Trudeau said.

“I am extremely confident that incoming ministration will continue to be a good partner to Cana and or nations around world as we look to impress upon China that approach y are taking is simply t working.”

Trudeau said Kovrig and Spavor have been arbitrarily detained for over 700 days.

Meng, chief financial officer of Huawei Techlogies, is living in a luxury Vancouver home while her extrition case continues in British Columbia court. Washington wants her extrited to U.S. to face bank fraud charges. U.S. accuses Huawei of using a Hong Kong shell company to deceive banks and do business with Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions.
