Trudeau pledges $1 billion to help battle virus

Canada is announcing $1 billion (US$730 million) in funding to help healthcare workers cope with the increasing number of new cases and to help Canadian workers who are forced to isolate themselves.

Canian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he is also loosening restrictions on employment insurance payments for people who are off work due to illness by waiving waiting period for benefits.

For most people, new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older ults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

In mainland China, where virus first exploded, more than 80,000 people have been diagsed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.
