Donald Trump ’s campaign has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), accusing the UK Labour Party of interfering in the ongoing US presidential race. The complaint claims that Labour has been involved in activities that could be seen as supporting the Harris-Walz campaign, labeling these efforts as "blatant foreign interference."
The Trump campaign's filing highlights media reports and social media posts, which suggest that Labour Party volunteers have been traveling to the US to support the Harris campaign.
In focus is a LinkedIn post from Labour Party's head of operations Sofia Patel, which has since been deleted, which sought volunteers to help Harris in the elections. The post indicated that nearly 100 individuals had signed up to travel to the US, and arrangements for housing would be provided. In the post, she says that she has 10 more spots available for anyone who wants to head to the battleground state of North Carolina, to help Harris.
She asks people who are interested to drop an email to labourforkamala@gmail.com.
What is the Trump campaign claiming?
The Trump campaign argues that these activities could amount to illegal foreign contributions to the Harris campaign, citing the involvement of Labour-linked individuals and alleged communication between the two political groups.
British PM is attempting to downplay the accusations
In defense, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has attempted downplayed the accusations, stating that Labour has a history of sending volunteers to assist with US elections. He emphasized that such efforts have been a longstanding practice. Party officials also clarified that the trips by volunteers were not organized or funded by the Labour Party itself. However, many Trump supporters are claiming that the Democrats, who for years accused Russia of interfering in US elections, seem all too conformable with UK's political interference in American elections.
Elon Musk, who is supporting Trump in this election cycle, and actively campaigning for him, has stated that UK's interference in US elections amounts to war.
As the election approaches, this latest dispute adds to an already heated political landscape, with accusations of foreign interference likely to intensify. Perhaps, this development is the October surprise everyone was waiting for. Although, only time will tell if this will become a major issue in the elections, considering the fact that only few days are remaining.
