UK expert says new coronavirus symptoms could be loss of smell or taste

UK experts have said that those coronavirus patients who don't develop cough or fever as symptoms could show loss of smell or taste as a sign of contraction.

British Association of Otorhilaryngology (ENT UK) in a statement released on March 21 said that those COVID-19 patients who don't develop cough or fever as symptoms could show loss of smell or taste as a sign of coronavirus contraction. According to release, re is good evidence from China, Italy, South Korea that shows COVID-19 positive patients have developed asmia, a condition related to loss of smell.

British Association of Otorhilaryngology (ENT UK) release stated, "Post-viral asmia is one of leing causes of loss of sense of smell in ults, accounting for up to 40% cases of asmia. Viruses that give rise to common cold are well kwn to cause post-infectious loss, and over 200 different viruses are kwn to cause upper respiratory tract infections. Previously described coronaviruses are thought to account for 10-15% cases. It is refore perhaps surprise that vel COVID-19 virus would also cause asmia in infected patients."

As per release, Germany has reported 2 in 3 COVID-19 patients have asmia, while in South Korea, where testing has been more widespre, 30 per cent of coronavirus positive patients have h asmia as ir major presenting symptom. release furr suggested that re is a potential of reducing coronavirus cases by asking ults to self-quarantine mselves if y have asmia but aren't showing any or symptoms.

Coronavirus outbreak

COVID-19 has claimed more than 14,600 lives across world and has infected nearly 3,38,000 people globally since it first broke out in December 2019, making it deliest disease outbreak of 21st century. China is most affected country in world as experts believe that virus originated from a seafood market in Wuhan city, epicentre of disease, where animals were reportedly being tred illegally.

Italy, Iran, and Spain are most affected countries outside mainland China, where, as of March 22 combined death toll stands at 8,933. Italy has surpassed China to record most number of deaths in world due to virus outbreak, while Iran and Spain both have crossed 1,500 mark.
