During the session of the European Parliament on September 18, Chief Negotiator of the EU, Michel Barnier said both the UK and EU should “not pretend to negotiate” on the Brexit issue if there were no new proposals for the current agreement. Moreover, Barnier said that it was not enough for Britain to tell the European Union of what they didn't like in the agreement. He further said during the debate that he wanted to work “night and day” towards a compilation of a satisfying deal for both parties involved. The Chief Negotiator urged the European Union Commission, Jean Claude-Juncker and his own team to make stern proposals.

Need for Backstop

Michel Barnier stressed on the need for the backstop and mentioned that if Britain left without a deal, several major problems will still be there to handle. Especially for issues that include the future of citizens that would be affected by Brexit. Peace in Northern Ireland along with protection of the European Union's single market might also face difficulties. There was also a scope for the Irish economy to be affected as well. Bernier also believes that none of the questions regarding the consequences of Brexit would disappear.

He further stressed that the challenges shall not be underestimated. There is a need for solutions which are legally operative in the withdrawal agreement that shall register each and every consequence. Bernier also wants to address all the risks that are involved in Britain's exit.

Delay in Brexit

The UK President has insisted again that he will not accept any delay in Brexit after October 31. On September 18, the majority of the European Parliament has voted in favour of a delay in Brexit. After the three-hour debate, the EU lawmakers adopted a non-binding resolution in favour of another extension in the Brexit deadline set by the conservative Prime Minister. Despite that, the leaders in the parliament are planning to discuss the possibility of another delay after the two-day summit on October 17 in Brussels in case there is no further progress.
