COVID-19: British Health Minister Matt Hancock worried about second wave

In an interview with a leading UK broadcaster, Hancock said he was “worried about the second wave” as it had already started to show up in Europe.

In a press conference on July 29, British health minister Matt Hancock said that UK authorities were “worried "about second wave of infection of vel coronavirus and were t hesitating to bring health safety measures back in order to prevent outbreaks. Only last week, UK imposed a mandatory 14-day quarantine protocol on Spain tourists, a measure that earned backlash and conjured up controversy with Spanish ministers. However, Hancock went on to name some more European countries giving an example of France where cases have recently surged.  

In an interview with a leing UK brocaster, Hancock said he was “worried about second wave”. In fact, he was reported as saying that second wave h alrey started to show up as could be established with rising number of cases across Europe. Hancock said UK authorities and he h to do everything possible to curb wave from reaching “se shores”. Moreover, British health minister said that more destinations could face quarantine measures after Prime Minister Boris Johnson vised cabinet ministers to act fast and enact measures to stem surge in cases in UK.

Everything to keep country safe

While health experts ted an urd trajectory in COVID-19 cases in UK, Health Minister Hancock said that UK leers were absolutely determined to do everything to keep country safe, according to reports. In ar televised interview, he said that authorities were determining wher it was safe to test people during quarantine and n be able to release m earlier. However, stressing on safety aspect, he said, if testing means "increasing number of days that people who've tested positive have to self-isolate, n so be it.” 

However, Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez criticized UK’s quarantine rules, saying, drastic quarantine measures were "disproportionate." Speaking on private television channels, Sanchez said, “re are negotiations that are happening that will be very important in coming months for relationship of UK with European Union.” He reminded that UK and Spain h a strong, ecomic, political, and commercial ties. However, an epidemiologist at University of ttingham Professor Keith Neal appreciated UK government’s move saying, “Some people have criticized lack of tice but with cases rising any delay would only increase cases in UK.” As of July 30, UK has over 301,455 confirmed cases of coronavirus and over 45,961 fatalities, according to a global tally. Kingdom recorded more than 581 cases in past 24 hours.
