UK Foreign Minister says 'taking the knee' seems to be from 'Game of Thrones'

UK Foreign Minister Dominic Raab has said on June 18 that “taking the knee” seems to have been inspired by the HBO’s drama series Game of Thrones amid protests.

UK Foreign Minister Dominic Raab has said on June 18 that “taking knee” seems to have been inspired by HBO’s drama series Game of Thrones. Amid worldwide protests of Black Lives Matter, triggered by death of African American George Floyd in police custody, most demonstrators have ‘taken knee’ to show solidarity and also to mourn for victim. In incident that took place in Minneapolis on May 25, a white officer h knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes and it was captured in a viral video fueling millions across globe to flood streets to protest against racial discrimination. 

However, Raab said in an interview with British rio that he understands sense of frustration and restlessness that has driven people to take streets and demand justice against racial bias in world. British Foreign Minister ackwledged that ‘taking knee’ might have a “broer history” but for him, it seems to have been inspired by Game of Thrones. This position was first taken by National Football League player Colin Kaepernick while America’s national anm was playing to protest against injustice. Since n, it has been incorporated by several players.

Dominic Raab said, “I've got to say on this 'taking knee' thing, which I don't kw, maybe it's got a broer history but it seems to be taken from Game of Thrones.”

"It feels to me like a symbol of subjugation and subordination rar than one of liberation and emancipation. But I understand people feel differently about it so it's a matter of personal choice," he ded.

‘To be clear’

However, after rio interview, Raab clarified on Twitter that “to be clear” he respects movement against racism and taking position of bending on one knee is wish of people. If protesters choose to ‘take knee’, British foreign minister respects that. He also ted that people need to unite to ericate racism along with social injustice.
