Parliament has reconvened on September 3 for a pivotal day in British politics as lawmakers challenged Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s insistence that U.K. will leave European Union on Oct. 31 even without a deal. Amid loud cries from protesters on streets surrounding House of Commons, lawmakers returned from ir summer recess with a key piece of legislation on ir nda that would prevent an immediate -deal exit. Johnson has tried to crack down on members of his Conservative Party who oppose his Brexit plans, warning m y would be expelled from party if y supported parliamentary efforts to block or delay Brexit. Former Treasury Chief Philip Hammond — one of Conservative rebels — said that he expected re would be votes to take control of business in House of Commons on Tuesday. If those pass, legislation to block -deal would be considered following day.

“Many colleagues have been incensed by some of actions over past week or so, and I think re is a group of Conservatives who feel very strongly that w is time to put national interest ahe of any threats to us personally or to our careers,” Hammond told BBC. “I think re will be eugh people for us to get this over line today.”
