WATCH | Plane battles fierce storm Gerrit during dramatic Heathrow airport landing

Aircraft observed experiencing turbulence above the runway as a storm disrupts travel networks.

In a video going viral shows the hair-raising instance when a Boeing 777 faced challenges while attempting to land at Heathrow Airport, contending with powerful winds from Storm Gerrit. The online video clip depicts the aircraft experiencing turbulence above the runway amidst foggy and windy conditions before making a safe landing.

In the video was captured on Wed. Dec. 27 by BigJetTV, the cameraman's voice can be heard pleading with the plane to come to a halt as it bounces along the runway. An alternate video shared by Sky News depicts an aircraft making three unsuccessful landing attempts in strong winds at Bristol Airport before finally touching down.

Storm Gerrit unleashed chaos on the transportation system and left thousands of homes without power on Wednesday. Gusts reaching up to 80mph and intense rainfall led to disruptions in rail services, ferries, and flights, causing delays.

British Airways had to cancel 18 scheduled flights at Heathrow, including domestic journeys to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. On Thursday morning, travel disruptions persist as flooding and road closures lead to the cancellation, delay or revision of certain ScotRail services. Additionally, Avanti West Coast services departing from London Euston will experience extended journey times as they are redirected through the Midlands.

The ferry operator Red Funnel, serving the route between Southampton and Cowes on the Isle of Wight, had to cancel its Red Jet passenger services due to strong winds. Simultaneously, a "localised tornado" is thought to be responsible for causing "significant damage" to homes in Greater Manchester on Wednesday.

At approximately 11:45 pm, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) responded to numerous reports of substantial damage to homes in Stalybridge, Tameside. While no injuries were reported, numerous residents were compelled to evacuate their homes.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) stated that workers faced wind speeds of up to 80mph in certain coastal areas as they labored to restore connections for customers, as per the reports.

As of 7:45 am on Thursday, over 14,000 individuals were without power, as reported by SSEN Distribution.

Storm Gerrit brought substantial rainfall with the Great Langdale Valley in the Lake District recording 80mm almost half the typical 178mm monthly rainfall for December, according to the Met Office.
