Forest fire that has been burning in Ukraine is w just one kilometre away from defunct Cherbyl nuclear power plant and poses a riation risk, Greenpeace Russia reportedly said on April 13. fire which broke out on April 4 in a forested area near disastrous Cherbyl power plant is w spreing at an alarming rate with new blazes emerging every day. Satellite ims that surfaced online on April 13  showed that fire h spre to 34,400 hectares of land.

According to media reports, a 2,600-square-kilometer (1,000-square-mile) Cherbyl Exclusion Zone was established after April 1986 disaster at plant that sent a cloud of rioactive fallout over much of Europe. However, Ukrainian emergency situations services have said that riation levels in exclusion zone have t changed. department furr said that, however, riation levels in nearby Keiv, capital city have "t exceeded natural background levels."

Speaking about spre of riations, Rashid Alimav, he of energy projects at Greenpeace Russia reportedly said that fire, fanned by high-speed wind, could disperse rionuclides, atoms that emit riations. He ded that a fire approaching a "nuclear or hazardous riation" facility was always a risk. He furr said that y were expecting rain on April 15.  

Cherbyl disaster

In April 1986, Cherbyl nuclear power plant polluted a large part of Europe after its fourth reactor exploded, resulting in immediate death of two operating staff. Due to absorbing high levels of riation, 134 emergency service members were hospitalised in days ahe, of which 28 people lost ir lives. 1986 disaster is considered worst nuclear disaster world has ever seen and it is also one of only two nuclear disasters that have taken place so far, or being Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster that rocked Japan in 2011.
