Ukraine recalls ambassador to Belarus amid ongoing unrest in nation

Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that he had recalled the ambassador to Belarus Ihor Kyzym for discussions to assess the future prospects.

Amid ongoing unrest prevailing in Belarus over disputed elections, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Monday, August 17 that he h recalled ambassor to Belarus Ihor Kyzym for discussions to assess future prospects of bilateral relations between two neighbours keeping in mind ‘new reality’. Ukrainian foreign minister said in a statement that events in Eastern European nation are ‘fundamentally changing’ situation in relations between both nations. 

This comes just days after foreign ministers of Lubin Triangle States including Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine released a joint statement about being ‘deeply concerned’ with situation in Belarus after elections declared Alexander Lukashenko as Belarusian president which according to opposition was ‘rigged’, furr triggering demonstrations calling for democracy. ditionally, states also talked about refrain of use of force and release of detained protesters.

August 10 statement re, “As Foreign Ministers of Lublin Triangle States, we are deeply concerned with escalation of situation in Belarus after presidential elections and call upon authorities to refrain from use of force and to release all those detained last night.”

Meanwhile, after denying possibility of a rerun of votes for several days, Belurasian president on Monday, August 17 said that he is rey to share his leership. He also ted that his change of decision was t based on pressure from protesters because according to Lukashenko, y are acting on foreign powers.

US official also reportedly said that Belarusian leer’s comments reflect realisation of government ackwledging public’s demands. However, official ded that sharing power still does t dress lack of fair elections.

Lukashenko on August 10 h secured yet ar term as country's president after authorities anunced preliminary results in which 65-year-old former Soviet Army member allegedly secured over 80 per cent of total votes polled.
