Following quite a Donald Trump-ish campaign, with what started as a media joke has now ended with a landslide victory for Comedian-turned-Politician Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine's 2019 Presidential elections, on Monday.
Zelensky (41), who played a president in a Ukranian TV Series called - 'Servant of the People' defeated incumbent Petro Poroshenko by taking 73 percent of the vote, according to official results. Counting of 42% of the ballots has completed, but the results indicate that Zelensky with no prior political experience will be sworn in as Ukraine's 6th President.
A euphoric Zelensky said to his jubilant supporters at his campaign headquarters that he would never let them down, as reported by Ukrainian media.
"I can tell all post-Soviet countries: 'Look at us! Everything is possible!", declared Zelensky.
Zelensky struck a chord with voters when he campaigned on the platform that he would stand up to the powerful oligarchs, corrupt bureaucrats, members of the parliament, just like his on-screen character Vasyl Petrovych Holoborodko- a high school history teacher, who, after a student posts a viral video of him giving a passionate anti-corruption rant, wins the presidential election as a write-in candidate, as per political analyst Lena Surzhko-Harned.
Ukrainians who were frustrated by social injustice, corruption and a war with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine that has claimed some 13,000 lives since 2014 feel optimistic in Zelensky and feel only a fresh face can clean up Ukraine's politics and end the separatist conflict.
Global leaders have congratulated the new leader while posing their doubts in his leadership:
British Foreign Secretary tweeted his hope for reforms and enhanced security.
While the Russian Prime Minister has aired his doubts in an attitude change of Ukraine towards Russia, he has hoped in a more pragmatic approach by Zelensky.
The rest of the world is just baffled and enjoying this 'comical' twist to the Ukrainian democracy.
