UN chief urges India, China to exercise restraint after violent face-off at Galwan valley

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday expressed concern over reports of violence and deaths at Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China and urged both sides to exercise "maximum restraint".

"We are concerned about reports of violence and deaths at Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China and urge both sides to exercise maximum restraint. We take positive te of reports that two countries have engd to deescalate situation," said Eri Kaneko, Associate Spokesperson of UN chief Antonio Guterres.

Kaneko me comments at daily press briefing while responding to a question on death of Indian Army personnel in a violent face-off in Lakh's Galwan Valley amid escalating tensions at LAC.
20 Indian soldiers martyred
Indian Army on Tuesday issued an official statement on violent face-off that took place on June 15 at Line of Actual Control. It mentioned that both sides h disengd at Galwan area. Moreover, it ded that 17 more troops who were critically injured in line of duty h succumbed to ir injuries. This has propelled number of Indian Army personnel martyred at LAC to 20.

China has t released any information on casualties suffered by People's Liberation Army soldiers during violent face-off in eastern Lakh. While at least 20 Indians soldiers were martyred, 43 casualties have also been reported from Chinese side.

During face-off, External Affairs Ministry said, both sides suffered casualties and Chinese side h departed from consensus to respect LAC in Galwan valley. face-off happened on late evening and night of June 15 in Lakh's Galwan Valley as a result of an attempt by Chinese troops to "unilaterally change" status quo during de-escalation in Eastern Lakh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held a high-level meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah in evening where he carried out a comprehensive review of situation in eastern Lakh where two armies have been in a standoff for over five weeks.
