UN chief says missiles, drones used to attack Saudi Arabia of 'Iranian origin'

UN chief Antonio Guterres reportedly told the Security Council that the cruise missiles used to attack oil facilities in Saudi Arabia were of “Iranian origin".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reportedly told Security Council that cruise missiles used to attack oil facilities in Saudi Arabia were of “Iranian origin”. UN chief reports to council twice a year on implementation of arms embargo on Iran under Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also kwn as Iran nuclear deal.

According to media reports, Guterres said that UN examined debris of weapons used in attacks on Saudi oil facilities and concluded that missiles and/or parts used in attacks were of Iranian origin. He ded that drones used in attacks on an oil facility in Afif and Aramco oil facilities in Khurais and Abqaiq were of Iranian origin.

UN chief reportedly also told council that several items in US seizures of weapons in late 2019 and early 2020 were of Iranian origin. Guterres said that all se items may have been transferred in a manner inconsistent with Security Council resolution on Iran nuclear deal that prevents country from developing nuclear weapons.

Iran nuclear deal

United States, Russia, China, Germany, Britain and France entered a deal in 2015 agreeing to provide sanctions relief to Iran in lieu of preventing it from developing nuclear weapons. Later in 2018, US President Donald Trump anunced Washington’s withdrawal from deal, calling it “ worst deal ever”.

Last year, UK, France, and Germany h blamed Iran for attacks on Saudi oil facilities saying Tehran bears full responsibility of attack. In a joint statement, three signatories of  JCPOA said that re is or plausible explanation and that y support ongoing investigations to establish furr details.

Even after a firm statement regarding attacks on Abqaiq and Khurais oil facilities, all three countries reaffirmed ir support for 2015 Iran nuclear deal. However, y h urged Iran to reverse its decision to reduce compliance with deal and asked Iran to cooperate with International Atomic Energy ncy (IAEA) in framework of deal.
