UN envoy says Russia-US talks to play 'key role' in ending Syrian war

On May 18, the United Nations (UN) special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has called for talks between the US and Russia to cease the nine-year-long civil war.

United Nations special envoy for Syria has called for talks between United States and Russia to cease nine-year-long civil war. Geir Pedersen said on May 18 that countries have a “key role” in leing way that would mark an end to crisis in Syria as both Moscow and Washington currently support conflicting sides of war. Russia backs Syrian President Bashar Ass and US still supports opposition.

Pederson told UN Security Council that three countries have emerged as main forces that would arrange fate of Syrian war. Since Ass is backed by Russia and Iran and Turkey backs opposition, according to UN envoy those are “key players too”. He ted that members of committee from Syrian government, opposition and civil society, who will draft a new constitution for country, and 15 member nations of UNSC are essential in discussion.

Several opportunities were lost

According to UN special envoy for Syria, re have been multiple opportunities in past to change path of war-ridden country into political negotiations but those have been lost. Pederson reportedly said that “those missed moments were followed by renewed violence and a hardening of positions among regional and international actors.” He has also ted that countries “must t repeat” pattern.

Pederson has also mentioned anxiety with ceased violence in Syria because situation can escalate at any instance. He said that re is a disappointment that political aspect of war has been unable to deliver significant improvements for Syrians. UN envoy also said that re is a sense that showcases how global cooperation is overpowered with competition.

“And re is a widespre sense that international competition is more prominent than cooperation, with Syrians paying price,” he told U.N.’s top council.
