UN fails to take action on order against Myanmar on Rohingya: Reports

The UN Security Council discussed the verdict by its top court, International Court of Justice against Myanmar but failed to agree on a statement on Feb 4.

United Nations Security Council discussed verdict by International Court of Justice on Myanmar on February 4 but did t take any action on it, according to reports. UN's top court, ICJ h ordered Myanmar to do all in ir power and prevent gecide against Rohingya Muslims, however, y failed to agree on a statement. diplomats who spoke on condition of anymity to an international ncy reportedly said that China and Vietnam, who are Myanmar's ally and also part of regional Association of Souast Nations, h presented objections to verdict.

Even though UN failed to derive a statement, European Union members of council h reportedly urged Myanmar in a joint statement to reporters after meeting that it should comply with orders by top court as y are “compulsory under International law”. France, Germany, Belgium and Estonia along with a former member of council, Poland h also jured Myanmar “to take credible action” to bring justice and hold ones responsible for violation of human rights.

“Myanmar must dress root causes of its conflicts, in Rakhine State, but also in Kachin and Shan States,” EU members said. “Accountability of perpetrators of human rights and humanitarian law violations is a necessary part of this process.” 

ICJ verdict on Rohingyas

ICJ h previously ordered Myanmar to prevent gecide from being committed against Rohingya Muslim mirity. UN's top court ordered country to take emergency “provisional measures” and urged to halt all persecution of ethnic group including killing, raping, and destroying homes and vills. Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, court's president said that ICJ “is of opinion that Rohingya in Myanmar remain extremely vulnerable.”

It was a unanimous decision when court also ruled that it has authority to consider a gecide case against Myanmar by creating “international legal obligations” on country. ICJ has ordered Myanmar to “take effective measures to prevent destruction and ensure preservation of evidence related” to its acts against Muslim mirity.

Nearly 740,000 Rohingya were forced to flee into camps in Banglesh after military of Myanmar launched a violent crackdown on group in 2017. This, according to UN officials was 'gecide'. This case in  International Court of Justice was first legal attempt by peace-making body to bring country into justice over crisis. It was also a rare example of a country suing ar over an issue to which it is t directly a party. tiny west African state of Gambia, which is acting on behalf of 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Corporation asked court to halt 'ongoing gecidal actions'.
