UN Guterres: pandemic is 'a crisis like no other'

Guterres was speaking during an online event in connection with the Nobel Prize celebrations, a day after the World Food Program (WFP) had been awarded the 2020 Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday said that the COVID19 pandemic was "a crisis like no other", and criticised the lack of a joint response from gonernments to this global threat.He warned COVID-19 vaccines should not suffer the same disjointed response, and must be considered "a global public good."

Guterres was speaking during an online event in connection with the Nobel Prize celebrations, a day after the World Food Program (WFP) had been awarded the 2020 Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger.The head of the WFP, David Beasley, said the number of people on the brink of starvation has risen from 135 million people to 270 million this past year.He went on to praise the Norwegian Nobel Institute for highlighting the importance of food in solving issues related to international peace and stability, adding "our hardest work is really right ahead of us in 2021."
