UN: Three aid workers killed in South Sudan amid Ebola screening

Three aid volunteers of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) were killed in South Sudan while they were working at Ebola screening points.

Three aid volunteers of International Organization for Migration (IOM) were killed in Morobo County of South Sudan while y were working at Ebola screening points. volunteers were tracking spre of dely disease when y got caught in a crossfire along DR Congo border. deceased included one female and two male volunteers.

During clashes, two or male volunteers suffered injuries and one of m is recovering from a gunshot wound. Ar female aid worker along with a four-year-old son of murdered female worker was abducted during attacks and ir whereabouts are t kwn.

IOM suspends screening at five points

IOM condemned killing of aid workers and suspended EVD screening at five points of entry sites, namely Isebi, Bazi, Kirikwa, Lasu and Okaba.

“We are deeply sdened by loss of our colleagues and we extend our heartfelt condolences to ir families and friends,” said IOM South Sudan Chief of Mission, Jean-Philippe Chauzy.

“We call for perpetrators of se senseless acts of violence against incent civilians and humanitarians to be brought to justice,” ded Chauzy.

'We are t a target'

IOM Director General António Vitori said that humanitarians and civilians should never be subjected to such heius acts of violence. “We are t a target,” said Vitori. UN migration ncy has also decided to suspend operations of flow monitoring points and support to health facilities.

“ safety of our personnel is paramount and will t be furr jeopardized until we secure guarantees for security of all our personnel operating in Morobo County,” said Chauzy.

In July, WHO h declared an international health emergency after a case of dely virus was confirmed in Congo. It was fifth such declaration in history after Ebola outbreak in West Africa, emergence of Zika and swine flu pandemic and polio. Many people h felt that declaration was long overdue.
