PM Modi Speaks to Donald Trump, Congratulates him on Spectacular Poll Win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his "spectacular" victory, and said he looked forward to working together with him again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and other sectors.

Official sources said Modi also congratulated Trump on the performance of his Republican Party in the US Congressional elections, as both leaders affirmed that they would work together for world peace.

The warm personal camaraderie between the two leaders came through in the telephonic conversation as Trump said the "whole world loves Modi" and described India as a magnificent country and the prime minister as a magnificent man, they added.

Trump also said that he considered Modi and India as a true friend, noting that the Indian leader was one of the first world leaders he spoke to after his victory, the sources added.

In a post on X, Modi said, "Had a great conversation with my friend, President Donald Trump, congratulating him on his spectacular victory. Looking forward to working closely together once again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other sectors." As Trump cruised to victory, Modi earlier in the day congratulated him on his "historic" presidential poll victory, and said he looks forward to renewing their collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership.

2 Republican Incumbents Lose in Georgia House

Democrats toppled two Republican incumbents in the Georgia state House, but won't narrow the Republican majority as much as they once hoped.

With four races still uncalled Wednesday, Republicans have 98 of the 180 House seats, while Democrats have 78. If all the candidates leading Wednesday win, Republicans would hold 100 seats and Democrats 80. But candidates in two of those races lead by fewer than 100 votes, meaning those elections could be headed to recounts.

Republicans held a 102-78 lead when voting began. GOP incumbents Mesha Mainor and Ken Vance lost to Democratic opponents, but Democratic efforts to unseat three more Republican incumbents in Atlanta's northern suburbs were falling short.

That's a win for Republicans, who will avoid the headaches of a significantly smaller majority, and for Gov. Brian Kemp, whose political organisation pumped USD 2 million into helping House GOP candidates.

It was the first election after a court ordered lawmakers to draw new lines to create more Black-majority districts. With Black voters strongly supporting Democrats, that created some Democratic opportunities in the House.

But GOP mapmakers redrew Georgia's 14 Congressional Districts and 56 state Senate districts, resulting in little meaningful partisan competition for those offices. The partisan balance in the state Senate remained at 33 Republicans and 23 Democrats, as it was before the election, after all incumbents won.

“Senate Republicans finished the drill tonight,” said Senate President Pro Tem John Kennedy, a Macon Republican.

Kremlin says, will judge Trump by his 'actions' on Ukraine

After the victory of Donald Trump in the 2024 US Presidential election, the Kremlin said that it would judge Donald Trump, who has vowed to swiftly end the Ukraine conflict, on his "actions" in office, as many in the West fear his second term could spell disaster for Kyiv.

Trump has repeatedly said he would end the conflict launched by the Kremlin in February 2022 "in 24 hours", without giving details on how. He has also lambasted the billions of dollars in US aid for Ukraine that are critical for its defence, and several times blamed Kyiv for the conflict. The Kremlin said it would wait to see what Trump would be like when he takes office in January, expressing some caution with relations between Moscow and Washington at an all-time low since the Cold War.

Wisconsin's Senate race appears to be allowed for recount

Wisconsin's hotly contested race for US Senate between Democratic Senate Tammy Baldwin and Republican Eric Hovde, who was backed by President-elect Donald Trump, appeared to be close enough early Wednesday for a recount to be requested.

Baldwin, a two-term incumbent, declared victory early Wednesday over Hovde, a multi-millionaire businessman who poured millions of his own money into the race. The Associated Press has not called the race.

Baldwin declared victory after the tally of absentee ballots from Milwaukee was reported around 4.30 am Wednesday. Baldwin had a lead of 0.9 per cent based on the unofficial results, just within the 1 per cent margin that would allow for Hovde to request a recount if he pays for it.

Brazil’s far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro says Trump’s presidential election victory was historic and will empower right-wing and conservative movements across the globe, and that he hoped it will inspire Brazil to “follow the same path.”

He said on X that Trump’s imminent return to the White House marked “the triumph of the people’s will over the arrogant designs of an elite who disdain our values, beliefs, and traditions.”

Bolsonaro lost his reelection bid in late 2022 and, a little over two months later, his supporters stormed the capital in a bid to restore him to power. It was widely seen as an echo of the U.S. Capitol insurrection two years earlier, and he’s now the target of several investigations.

Nevada polls close nearly 3 hours later

Polls closed in Nevada nearly three hours late after voters waited in long lines to cast ballots, the state’s top election official said, and initial election results began to be posted just before 10 p.m. PST.

Polls had been scheduled to close at 7 p.m., but state law allows anyone in line at that time to cast a ballot.

Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar acknowledged Nevada’s position as an electoral battleground and promised to keep updating results as the counties receive “and cure” additional ballots.

Mailed ballots are accepted and counted until Saturday, and thousands of voters whose ballots were set aside to allow for signature verification, or “curing,” have until 5 p.m. Nov. 12 to validate their vote with election officials.

Aguilar, a Democrat, called Nevada’s elections “safe, secure and transparent” and said he was proud of reports of high voter turnout.

Harris’ path to the White House is growing less forgiving

Kamala Harris still has a path to the White House through the Northern battleground states, but the map is getting less forgiving. Harris’ campaign has long said her surest way to 270 electoral votes was through Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, states Trump won in 2016 and Biden captured narrowly in 2020.

Harris cannot lose Pennsylvania and reach 270 electoral votes. However, she can lose pieces of the blue wall — so named for its longtime reputation as a Democratic firewall — and still reach 270.

If she loses Michigan, she can make it up by winning Arizona and Nevada. She can lose Wisconsin and make up for it with Arizona.

But the map has surely shrunk for Harris, who cannot lose more than one in the three-state northern arc.

Bomb threat emails came from Russian email domain

The head of the U.S. government’s cybersecurity agency says that though bomb threat emails sent to multiple states came from Russian email domains, it’s not clear that the culprits were actually Russian.

Jen Easterly, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told reporters Tuesday night that the matter was still being investigated and that the identity of the senders remains unknown.

The FBI said earlier in the day that the email threats sent to Georgia and other states were all judged to be noncredible and were from a Russian email domain. Easterly said the emails did not affect the ability of the voters to cast ballots.

Easterly also said the bomb threats reported in multiple states were all deemed noncredible and did not affect the ability of voters to cast ballots.

The Democratic Party’s influence in New Mexico has only grown over the last two decades, with former President George W. Bush being the last Republican to win the state in 2004. Harris never made any campaign stops in the state, but support in New Mexico’s more populous areas outweighed voters in conservative pockets as second-term Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and members of the state’s congressional delegation campaigned on the vice president’s behalf.

Donald Trump wins North Carolina, first of 7 swing seats

Former President Donald Trump won the battleground state of North Carolina on Tuesday. Trump receives the state’s 16 electoral votes after defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Trump also won the state in 2016 and 2020, but Democrats had been optimistic they could reverse previous outcomes with campaign spending, canvassing and Harris rallies. They also tried to link Trump to embattled Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. But Trump and running mate JD Vance visited North Carolina often during the fall campaign, pushing a more protectionist economic agenda and promises to crack down on illegal immigration and the southern border.

Trump loses Colorado after railing against Aurora

Trump turned the Colorado suburb of Aurora into part of his message against illegal immigration. In the end, he failed to capture the Mountain State, which has become increasingly Democratic in recent years.

Trump likened Aurora to a “war zone” overrun by a Venezuelan gang that had taken over multiple buildings. Authorities pushed back against that characterization, saying it was a single block and the area was once again safe.

Colorado is one of the several states Trump visited down the stretch outside the seven most competitive states. In recent weeks, he also campaigned in California, New Mexico and, memorably, in New York for the rally at Madison Square Garden.

What to watch as polls are closing

Pennsylvania: Many of the earliest results will include mailed ballots, which have tended to favor Democratic candidates in the past. The state reported almost twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans voted in advance this year. But any early advantage could change later as more Election Day votes are counted.

Michigan: Polls are about to close across most of Michigan. In the past, initial returns sometimes favored Republicans because Democratic-dominated Wayne County, the state’s largest and home to Detroit, was slow to report mailed votes. But this year, counties may process mailed ballots earlier. That’s expected to make the count go faster.

Atlanta precincts extend voting hours after bomb threats disrupt polling

A judge ruled Tuesday afternoon that several metro Atlanta precincts will stay open until 7:58 p.m. ET, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The context: The NAACP and its Georgia State Conference had urged Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to extend voting hours in Gwinnett, Fulton, and DeKalb counties after bomb threats temporarily closed multiple polling locations, mostly in predominantly Black neighborhoods.

Officials found the threats to be non-credible, with Raffensperger stating that they originated from Russia. These disruptions impacted voting in key Atlanta areas where Black voters hold substantial influence.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson condemned the threats, saying, “The right to vote is sacred. No individual or foreign entity should undermine the voices of Black Georgians.”

Milwaukee to recount 31,000 absentee ballots

The Milwaukee Election Commission announced that it will recount approximately 31,000 absentee ballots, due to an issue with panel doors on tabulation machines. Observers noticed that the doors, which provide access to the machines' power switches, were not fully closed after several hours of counting. To ensure transparency and security, the commission opted to recount these ballots, which make up nearly one-third of Milwaukee’s 100,000 absentee ballots. As a result, final results from Wisconsin’s largest city are not anticipated until well past midnight, local time, according to the New York Times.

US university offers post-election 'self-care' with Legos and cookies to 'traumatized' students

The day after the election, while most people in America will start their morning with breakfast and go about their routines regardless of the outcome, students at Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy have a different option: spending time with Legos.

According to a report from The Free Press, an an email, Jaclyn Clevenger, the school’s director of student engagement, announced a "Self-Care Suite" for McCourt students. Acknowledging the stress of the times, she invited students to the Commons on the 3rd floor for a day of relaxation, mindfulness activities, and snacks.

Here’s the lineup:

  • 10:00-11:00 a.m.: Tea, Cocoa, and Self-Care
  • 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: Legos Station
  • 12:00-1:00 p.m.: Healthy Treats and Healthy Habits
  • 1:00-2:00 p.m.: Coloring and Mindfulness
  • 2:00-3:00 p.m.: Milk and Cookies
  • 4:00-5:00 p.m.: Legos and Coloring
  • 5:00-6:00 p.m.: Snacks and Self-Guided Meditation

According to The Free Press, Clevenger did not respond to questions about why graduate students might need milk and cookies to recover from election-related stress or how such practices might influence future diplomats.

Georgetown is not alone in offering post-election support. Missouri State University’s counseling center has set up a “self-care no phone zone” with calming jars, coloring pages, and sensory fidgets. Last week, The New York Times also reported that Fieldston, a private school in New York City, made attendance optional the day after the election for students feeling emotionally distressed, canceled homework, and provided psychologists for “Election Day Support.”

Why is voting time being extended in some areas?

While most polling places nationwide have reported minimal issues today, a few locations have extended voting hours due to delayed openings or equipment malfunctions, particularly in battleground states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.

In Pennsylvania's Cambria County, where Donald J. Trump received strong support in 2020, a judge extended voting hours by two hours, allowing polls to stay open until 10 p.m. Eastern time, due to problems with ballot scanning machines. In Laflin, a borough in Luzerne County, voting was extended until 9:30 p.m. following a delayed opening. In North Carolina, voting was extended by 30 minutes, until 8 p.m., at single precincts in Burke and Wilson counties due to delays. Meanwhile, in Georgia’s Cobb County, two precincts extended voting by 20 minutes, keeping polls open until 7:20 p.m. Eastern time.

High numbers of ballots being rejected in Nevada, a crucial swing state

On Tuesday morning, Nevada’s secretary of state raised concerns over the high number of ballots rejected in the state’s largest counties, Clark and Washoe.

In Nevada, the signature on a mail-in ballot envelope must match one in the voter database. If signatures don’t match, voters have until Nov. 12 to “cure” their ballots, a process that allows them to address the discrepancy. According to state reports from Monday night, over 11,300 ballots in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, and more than 1,800 in Washoe County require curing. In close races, a significant number of ballots needing cures could influence the final outcome.

In both counties, the number of ballots flagged for curing is higher than in 2020 and 2022, and officials expect this number to increase as more mail ballots are processed.

“When you start to examine the data and see such high numbers, it’s concerning,” Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar commented outside Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas. He added, “With margins so tight, we don’t want to be left waiting for ballots to be cured. It’s essential that every voter’s voice is heard.”

Why are the ballots being rejected?

Aguilar noted that signature mismatches were often due to younger voters whose signatures don’t match what’s on their driver’s licenses. “Young people today often lack consistent signatures,” he explained, noting that signatures captured through the DMV’s digital pads, as part of automatic voter registration, were often the source of the discrepancies.

To address this, his office is sending guidance to counties to ensure consistent application of the signature verification process statewide.

Nevada is a crucial swing state. In the last 30 Presidential elections, Nevada has voted for the winning candidate 27 times. It voted for the losing candidate only in 1908, 1976 and 2016.

The state has 6 Electoral College votes.

Elon Musk suggests, Google is intervening in the elections, in favor of Harris

Elon Musk, along with numerous other people, is suggesting that Google is indirectly intervening in the elections, to help Harris.

The central claim is that - when someone asks Google “where can I vote for Harris?” it shows relevant results. However, when someone asks Google “where can I vote for Trump”, it doesn't show relevant results. The end result? Making it harder for Trump voters to figure out where they need to go, to cast their vote.

White women will play a decisive role in this election

While Vice President Kamala Harris’s electoral prospects have raised concerns about potential challenges from key groups like Black men—who are second only to Black women in their loyalty to the Democratic Party—pollsters and strategists suggest the outcome may hinge more on white women voters.

White women form the largest voting demographic in the U.S., representing roughly 30% of the electorate, and they consistently have high turnout rates. Historically, they tend to lean more toward Republican candidates in presidential elections, including in Donald Trump’s last two campaigns.

In 2016, 47% of white women supported Trump, while 45% voted for Hillary Clinton. This gap widened in 2020, with 53% voting for Trump compared to 46% for Joe Biden.

The 2016 election highlighted the influence of white female voters in a way unseen since the early days of women’s suffrage, and many Democrats blamed them for blocking Clinton’s path to becoming the first female president. Now, as the first presidential election since the overturning of Roe v. Wade unfolds, the widening gender gap has again made white women a pivotal swing group. Recent New York Times/Siena College polls show a tight race among white female voters, with Harris holding a slight lead.

However, there is a possibility that abortion might not be the primary concern for a majority of white women. If that turns out to be the case, it'll be good news for Republicans.

Yesterday, the journalist Megyn Kelly, who asked Trump the famous pointed question during the 2016 primaries, endorsed Trump. This is notable because Kelly was insulted by Trump for doing her job and she even received death threats from some Trump supporters, after Trump insulted her. The fact that despite all the bad blood, Kelly endorsed Trump, reveals that some White women, are more worried by left-wing extremism, than say, abortion.

Some advisors have urged Trump to declare premature victory

Some of Donald Trump's advisers have recommended that he consider declaring victory on election night if he’s leading Kamala Harris in critical battleground states like Pennsylvania, although it’s uncertain whether he will follow this advice, sources close to him suggest, as per a report from The Guardian.

Advisers generally believe there’s little risk for Trump in claiming he’s won if he holds a lead of several hundred thousand votes in Pennsylvania or if his internal polling suggests a likely victory, even if results aren’t fully confirmed by Tuesday night. However, some of Trump’s closest and most combative allies—including former White House strategist Steven Bannon, who spoke with Trump last week—have advised him to wait on any declaration if the race appears close by the time he retires for the night, to avoid potential embarrassment.

In the campaign’s final days, Trump and his team have exuded confidence, fueling supporters’ expectations of a win. This approach could contribute to claims of a “stolen” election should Harris ultimately prevail. Any premature declaration of victory may further reinforce this narrative.

Trump is at Mar-a-Lago, where is Harris?

The Democratic nominee is expected to make a public appearance later tonight (US EST) at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she will address supporters at her alma mater.

After a busy day of campaigning in Pennsylvania, Harris returned to her residence, the Naval Observatory in DC,  just hours before polls opened early Tuesday morning.

Throughout the day, Harris is expected to participate in a series of last-minute "Get Out The Vote" calls to radio stations, aiming to reach Americans on their commutes who are yet to vote. Her campaign confirmed that so far, she has made calls to stations in three key battleground states: Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina, with additional calls planned.

When asked about her top priority if elected, Harris emphasized reducing the cost of living, a central concern for voters this election season. She mentioned her economic proposals on housing, healthcare, and the child tax credit during an interview on NewsRadio KDKA, and highlighted immigration reform as another critical area, acknowledging the challenges previous presidents have faced with this issue.

Whoever wins, Elon Musk has played a crucial role in this election cycle

Millions of Americans are casting their vote today. Millions already have. Whoever wins, one of the most important stories of this election cycle has been the role Elon Musk has played. In general, the ultra-wealthy in America donate their money to a candidate they want to win, fund a PAC and that is about it. However, Elon Musk has played a more active role, than perhaps any other ultra-wealthy American.

Until a few years ago, Musk used to be a Democrat. However, times have changed. Just a day before the Election Day, Musk recorded a podcast with Joe Rogan, and urged people to go out and vote for Trump. He made the case for Trump by arguing that US won't be a real democracy anymore if Democrats win, because they will move illegal aliens to the swing states, which will ensure that Democrats win the swing state in every election, effectively ending democracy in America.

Musk has also played a key role in the swing state of Pennsylvania, which is a crucial state. He has been overseeing the GOP's ground game in the state. Whether his efforts will bear fruit, remains to be seen.
