New York: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance took center stage at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York on Tuesday for the highly anticipated 2024 vice presidential debate. For 90 minutes, the two candidates discussed major issues like border policy, climate change, and the controversial migrant situation in Springfield, Ohio. Their performances provided plenty of material for the online audience, with the internet quickly flooding with memes.

JD Vance's "Jim Halpert" Moment Dominates Online Reactions

Senator JD Vance was particularly memorable for his smirks and expressions, which many viewers compared to Jim Halpert from The Office breaking the fourth wall. At multiple points during the debate, Vance seemed to glance at the camera with a knowing smile, drawing instant comparisons to the famous sitcom character.

"JD Vance breaking the 4th wall anytime Walz talks has me chuckling," wrote former campaign adviser Link Lauren on social media.

Another user wrote on Twitter, “JD Vance is breaking the 4th Wall so hard I feel like I’m watching The Office”.

Netizens also quipped about his side eye look, compared it with L'Oreal Paris Eyeliner commercial ad.

The lighthearted tone continued as users joked about Vance's awkward jokes and demeanor. Some compared Walz to Kevin Malone, another beloved character from The Office.

Moderators Steal the Spotlight with On-Point Fact-Checking

While the candidates exchanged barbs, it was debate moderators Margaret Brennan and Norah O'Donnell who also grabbed the internet's attention. As seasoned CBS journalists, their firm handling of the debate's more chaotic moments earned praise from viewers.

At one point, when Vance made claims about illegal immigrants overwhelming cities like Springfield, Ohio, Brennan was quick to clarify that the Haitian migrants in Springfield have legal status. Vance, clearly agitated, pushed back, leading to a brief but awkward exchange where both candidates' mics were muted by CBS.

"The audience can’t hear you because your mics are cut," Brennan quipped with a smile, as both candidates were silenced for a few moments.

Muted Mics and Missed Punchlines: A Different Debate Atmosphere

The absence of a live audience meant that JD Vance’s failed attempts at humor didn’t receive the typical awkward silence that might have followed. But social media quickly took over, with users highlighting the strange atmosphere of the debate.

"JD Vance feels like he’s appealing to a Twitch audience, just waiting for chat to react," one user joked, referencing Vance’s smirk-laden delivery.

Even as the debate turned serious, with discussions on the economy and immigration, the internet found ways to turn the event into meme gold. Walz’s visible nerves, paired with Vance’s laid-back attitude, only fueled the meme culture that took over after the debate.

In the aftermath of the debate, one thing was clear: the event may not have swayed many undecided voters, but it certainly gave the internet plenty to laugh about.
