After Iran's Revolutionary Guard shot down a US spy drone which had violated the country's airspace near the Strait of Homuz, US President Donald Trump on Thursday posted an ominous tweet.
Trump in his typical style reacted informally and said that Iran had made a "very big mistake".
Iran's Revolutionary Guard had said on Thursday that it had shot down a US "spy drone" which in the region. The incident was the latest one to stoke tension in the strategic sea lane. There was no immediate reaction from the United States.
The US-manufactured Global Hawk surveillance drone was hit with a missile "after violating Iranian air space" over the waters of Hormozgan province, the Guard said in a statement. The Iranian military did not immediately publish images of the drone.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said any use of force by the US against Iran would lead to disaster as tensions escalate between Washington and Tehran. "The US says it does not rule out the use of force... This would be a disaster for the region," Putin said during an annual televised phone-in with screened questions posed by Russian viewers.
The incident comes at a time of growing antagonism between Iran and the United States following two waves of still unexplained attacks on Gulf shipping, which Washington has blamed on Tehran.
Iran has denied any involvement and hinted that the US might have orchestrated them itself to provide a pretext for the use of force against the Islamic republic.
