House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a new statue in the Capitol to honor pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart.
The statue is one of two to represent Kansas in the Statuary Hall Collection, where each state has two statues.
Kansas Senators Roger Marshal and Jerry Moran, along with Representative Sharice Davids celebrated the great hero and her significance to the state of Kansas.
On May 21, 1932, pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean as she landed in Northern Ireland, about 15 hours after leaving Newfoundland.
Earhart's plane vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 between New Guinea and Howland Island.
A 17-day search turned up no trace of the pioneering woman flier, navigator Fred Noonan or their Lockheed Electra, and theories about her disappearance abound.
