Congressmembers give Trump speech mixed reviews

US President Donald Trump stood before a Congress and nation sharply divided by impeachment and used his State of the Union address on Tuesday to extol a “Great American Comeback” on his watch.

That's just three years after he took office decrying a land of “American carnage” under his predecessor.

The partisan discord in Washington was on vivid display as the first president to campaign for reelection while facing impeachment vigorously made his case for another term: Republican legislators chanted “Four More Years.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripped up her copy of Trump's speech as he ended his address.

Members of Congress were divided on what they heard from the president.

Republican Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota said President Trump had a bright message about the future.

Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas said the speech was full of divisive rhetoric and offered nothing to Americans who needed help.

Democratic Congresswoman Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania expressed appreciation that the president had mentioned the nation's opioid crisis, but she said he didn't offer any ideas of what he would do about it.
