Coronavirus: Russian media speculate US conspiracy behind deadly epidemic
The novel coronavirus outbreak in China has given birth to several conspiracy theories and Russian media has been at the forefront in propagating it for days.

As China saw a steep rise in death toll due to coronavirus, COVID-19, Russian media gave primetime for baseless conspiracy ories and misinformation propagated on internet. Channel One, a major Russian Television network, launched a separate show devoted for conspiracy ories around coronavirus with name ‘Vremya’ (Time).

Though show claims to debunk ories, ambiguous reporting leaves room for misinterpretation and doubts in viewers’ mind, making m wonder if re can be a possibility of a conspiracy. channel, in one of its programmes, speculated over word ‘corona’ which means crown in Russian and Latin.

'Trump-corona' connection
While name emerged from crown-like shape of coronavirus, presenter hinted that US President Donald Trump’s used to preside over beauty pants and handed crowns to winners, and somehow it was all related. An “expert” even went on to claim that vel coronavirus is an artificially created strain and that US intelligence ncies and pharmaceutical companies are behind it.

During show, a correspondent quoted an online conspiracy ory which claimed vel strain affects only Asians and has been created by US as an “ethnic bioweapon”. He mits that re is conclusive evidence against such claim but me a suggestive remark, quoting “experts”, that thing can be ruled out.
Meanwhile, World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that it is too early to predict end of vel coronavirus after a drop in new cases. Speaking at ncy's daily news conference, Michael Ryan, he of WHO's health emergencies programme, opined that it is way too early to predict beginning, middle and end of pandemic. At least 1,359 people have died of epidemic and more than 60,000 cases have been detected globally till date.
