Just weeks after former US President Donald Trump called Hungary's PM Viktor Orban the leader of Turkey, he said that the Eastern European country borders with Russia. The bizarre proclamation came during his rally speech in Sioux City, Iowa, on Sunday. The business-mogul-turned politician was ranting about a foreign policy and went on to laud Orban’s leadership, Politico reported. The video of his false assertion was later shared by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential team.

“Did anybody ever hear of Viktor Orbán? He’s the head of Hungary. Hungary fronts on both Ukraine and Russia,” Trump said in the Sunday event. While Trump managed to match the leader correctly, Hungary does not border Russia and is about 1,000 kilometres away from their closest point. However, this was not the first time Trump implied that Hungary borders with Russia, he made the same mistake at a rally in New Hampshire last week. In the same event, he called Orban the “leader of Turkey”. “There’s a man, Viktor Orbán, did anyone ever hear of him?” Trump said, referring to the Hungarian Prime Minister. “He’s probably, like, one of the strongest leaders anywhere in the world. He’s the leader of Turkey,” he added.

Trump and Orban: A peculiar love story

The Trump and Orban love story is not a new one. Earlier this month, the Hungarian premier endorsed Trump’s presidential campaign and even wore the former US President’s trademark merch to showcase his support. “Look what came in the mail today! Thank you for your support, @realDonaldTrump!” Orbán wrote on X sharing a photograph of himself donning the merch. Meanwhile, Trump’s geographical goof-up is not only limited to Hungary. During the Sunday event, Trump thanked the people of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. However, he was attending an event in Sioux City, Iowa.
