EAM S Jaishankar meets Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of UNGA
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his Iranian counterpart on margins of UNGA on Monday and said the exchange of perspectives on regional development

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his Iranian counterpart Jav Zarif on sidelines of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday, September 23 and commented that exchange of perspectives on regional developments was very useful. Jaishankar is a part of Indian contingent which is in New York for 74th UNGA session. He will also meet Pakistan's Foreign Minister on margins of UNGA. "I will meet Pakistani Foreign Minister on sidelines of UNGA," Jaishankar h said while briefing media on 100 days of Modi 2.0 government.

US sanction on India's oil import from Iran
meeting of Jaishankar with Iran's Foreign Minister Jav Zarif holds importance due to ongoing US-Iran tension. United States has been putting pressure on India to impose more sanctions on Iran. Iran was one of biggest oil suppliers to India but oil tre plummeted in May after continuous pressure from Trump ministration. In an attempt to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero, US President Donald Trump refused to give waivers to India from buying oil from Iran.

'Affordability, accessibility and security' of energy to India
After sanctions on oil imports, Iran h said that it believes India will act in its national interest on issue of oil imports and Tehran can act as a "protector" of India's energy security. Ali Chegeni, Iran's Ambassor to India, h asserted that his country can provide 'affordability, accessibility and security' of energy to India. "If Mr Jaishankar said affordability, accessibility, and security of energy, Iran is only country that can provide all se aspects of energy for India. We expect from a friend... that we understand each or, follow our national interest and Iran is rey for being protector of energy security of India," Chegeni h said.

US-Iran ongoing conflict
conflict between US and Iran escalated after Saudi oil facilities were attacked by Yemen's Houthi rebels. United States blamed Iran for drone attack. “Tehran is behind nearly 100 attacks on Saudi Arabia while Rouhani and Zarif pretend to eng in diplomacy," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo h tweeted after attack. "Amid all calls for de-escalation, Iran has w launched an unprecedented attack on world’s energy supply. re is evidence attacks came from Yemen,” he ded.
