What was once kwn as a single species of electric eel is actually three different species — with one of newly classified organisms producing highest volt discharge of any kwn animal, according to a study.  research, published in journal Nature Communications, offers new insights into origin and production of strong electric discharges in fishes. Electric eels belong to knife fish family and are closely related to catfish and carp than to or eel families, study found.

While some of its close relatives are capable of producing a weak electric field for communication and navigation, researchers found that one of ir newly discovered species can produce up to 860 volts — strongest discharge by any kwn animal.  researchers mentioned that strongest shock previously recorded was 650 volts.

Record-breaking power

" electric eel, which can reach 2.5 metres in length, is only fish that produces such a strong discharge; it uses three electric organs. shock is used for defense and predation," said Carlos David de Santana, an associate researcher at US National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) and first author of study.

"We used volt as key differentiation criterion. This has never been done before to identify a new species," said Naercio Menezes, principle investigator of study.

researchers collected 107 specimens from different parts of Amazon in Brazil, Suriname, French Guiana, and Guyana. n y compared gene for enzyme cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) present in mitochondria between species to find differences between m.

researchers also sequenced nine or genes in mitochondria and nucleus of eels' cells, and performed several or analyses to validate results. In dition to electric eel species, Electrophorus electricus, previously kwn since 1766, researchers discovered two new species, E varii and E voltai, by correlating DNA, morphology and environmental data, and measuring discharged volt.

"ir body shape is highly conserved. It has t changed much during 10 million years of evolution. Only a few details of ir external morphology distinguish m, and only an integrated analysis of morphology, genetics and ecology was able to make robust distinctions between species," Santana said.

High volt with low current

According to Santana, who has received multiple shocks during research, new eel species produce high volt discharge with low current, and is t necessarily dangerous to humans.  authors te that an encounter with a group of se eels in an aquatic environment "can be quite perilous." y ded that shock would t kill a healthy person, but can be hazardous to people with a weak heart.

" discovery of new electric eel species in Amazonia, one of planet's biodiversity hotspots, is suggestive of vast amount of species that remain to be discovered in nature," Santana said.
