Amid growing chaos in Syria, President Donald Trump has ordered all US troops to withdraw from country's rth to avoid an "untenable" conflict between Turkey and US-backed Kurdish fighters, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Sunday. approximately 1,000 US troops in Syria are t leaving country entirely, Esper told CBS' "Face Nation." Esper said he spoke to Trump on Saturday night amid growing signs that Turkish invasion, which began Wednesday, is growing more dangerous.

"In last 24 hours, we learned that y ( Turks) likely intend to expand ir attack furr south than originally planned and to west," Esper said.

Esper said he would t discuss a timeline for US pullback, but he said it would be done "as safely and quickly as possible." Esper isn't saying how many US troops will leave rth, but he says y represent most of 1,000 troops in Syria. He also said it appears US-backed Kurdish forces, kwn as Syrian Democratic Forces, are trying to "cut a deal" with Syrian army and Russia to launch a counterattack against Turks.
