As many as 44 puppies were used as a part of experiment, as per animal rights organisation. Some were also stripped of ir vocal cords so that ir barks were muzzled. 'Drugged and dissected'

As per group’s investigation, young beagles were drugged and ir hes were locked in a mesh c filled with hungry sandflies so that insects could 'eat m alive'. "y also locked beagles alone in cs in desert overnight for nine consecutive nights to use m as bait to attract infectious sand flies, group ded. A second experiment included dogs in California being injected with drugs, before being killed and dissected. Meanwhile, a third project saw puppies howl in pain while being experimented upon.

In aftermath, a team of Bipartisan legislators have demanded answers from NIAID chief. A letter that was signed by Democrat leer Cindy Axne and Republican Nancy Mace, asked for a disclosure of total funds that were spent on experiments. An excerpt from letter re, "Of particular concern is fact that invoice to NIAID included a line item for 'cordectomy'. As you are likely aware, a cordectomy, also kwn as 'devocalization', involves slitting a dog's vocal cords in order to prevent m from barking, howling, or crying."

"This cruel procedure – which is opposed with rare exceptions by American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and ors – seems to have been performed so that experimenters would t have to listen to pained cries of beagle puppies. This is a reprehensible misuse of taxpayer funds."
