The leading infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday the development of a vaccine for the coronavirus was moving at rapid speed because of "the urgency of the situation."
Fauci spoke as President Donald Trump issued a stout defense Tuesday of a disproved use of a malaria drug as a treatment for the coronavirus.
The White House Health Adviser, said in an interview with the Associated Press that "we have got to do a considerable amount of community engagement and community outreach because there is this reluctance to get vaccinated."
He added, "we've got to make as much open, honest and transparent outreach to the community to convince them that getting vaccinated is for their benefit and the benefit of the community."
More than 4 million people in the U.S. have been infected by the coronavirus and the death toll is nearing 150,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
