Study: First case of coronavirus re-infection identified in US

A new study has found that a young adult in Nevada, US has been re-infected with coronavirus, marking the first confirmed case of reinfection in the country.

As world struggles to deal with ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, even slightest of new information about virus can bring a fresh supply of stress. And w a new study has found that a young ult in Neva, US has been re-infected with vel coronavirus, marking first confirmed case of reinfection in country and fourth in world.

According to online preprint of a study that has t been reviewed by outside experts yet, researchers have found first possible case of virus reinfection in US after a 25-year-old in Neva tested positive second time. team at University of Neva Re School of Medicine and Neva State Public Health Laboratory reported that genetic tests indicated patient was infected with two different varieties of virus.

Researchers are publishing a paper on his case in medical journal Lancet. 25-year-old man first contracted a mild case of dely virus in April after he experienced symptoms like cough, heache, nausea and diarrhoea, from which he recovered. According to researchers, he got better around April 27 and tested negative for infection twice later. He continued to feel better for about a month.

However, on May 31, he sought care for fever, heache, cough, dizziness and nausea. As per study, his second case was severe, requiring him to be hospitalised and put on oxygen support. n he was tested again for virus and results came out to be positive, confirming reinfection. team of researchers examined genetic material from both coronavirus specimens collected from man and ir evaluation suggested that he h two different viral infections.

According to researchers, this qualifies case as a true infection and experts expect that reinfections would t be uncommon. reasons around man's reinfection are t clear, but researchers stated that immune system, virus, or a combination of both could be determining factor. researchers also ted that se findings suggest that humans can contract vel coronavirus multiple times.

However, this is t first case of reinfection globally. Apart from US, vel coronavirus reinfections have also been reported in Hong Kong, Nerlands and Belgium.  Earlier this week, a team of researchers from Hong Kong said that y found first case of COVID-19 reinfection in a 33-year-old man, who tested positive for virus twice this year. pre-print study, which University of Hong Kong said recently has been accepted by journal Clinical Infectious Diseases identified that man was re-infected with two different versions of virus 142 days apart.
