As the race to the White House gets more intense day by day, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that former US President Donald Trump “can’t win” the upcoming 2024 US Presidential elections. The remarks from the Florida governor came during his appearance on a show called “Real Time with Bill Maher”. In the interview, DeSantis insisted that Trump would be heading to another election defeat since he “can’t get the job done”. The two GOP hopefuls used to be close before an intense rivalry started brewing between them. In the past, the former US President has given all sorts of nicknames to DeSantis, the famous one being “Ron DeSantimonius”

“I don’t think he can win the election. I could win the election… I don’t think he can actually get the job done that we need to do,” DeSantis said in the interview on Friday. “We need accountability for what this government did to this country with the COVID restrictions, mandates, and lockdowns. Donald Trump is not going to do that,” he added. The Florida governor’s comment came days after he condemned the business mogul turned-politician for not attending the second Republican Presidential debate.

DeSantis holds the fort against Trump

DeSantis, who has lost significant popularity among Republican supporters, has become one of the biggest critiques of the former US President. During the second GOP Presidential debate, DeSantish joined Former New Jersey governor Chirs Christie in bashing Trump for not attending the debate. While Christie referred to Trump as “Donald Duck,” the Florida governor called his absence outrightly disrespectful. During his time at the debate, DeSantis used his time to bash both Trump and US President Joe Biden for being "missing in action". “Where’s Joe Biden? He’s completely missing in action from leadership, and you know who else is missing in action: Donald Trump,” DeSantis chided.

The Florida governor made these remarks when the matter of the looming government shutdown was being discussed at the debate. “[Trump] should be on this stage tonight. He owes it to you to defend his record, where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt that sets the stage for the inflation that we have,” he added. On Wednesday, DeSantis slammed Trump for his lacklustre stance on the issue of abortion. “Trump should be here explaining his comments, to try to say that pro-life protections are somehow a terrible thing. I want him to look into the eyes and tell people who have been fighting this fight for a long time,” the Florida governor said at a campaign event. Earlier this month, Trump criticised Florida's six-week abortion ban, calling it a “terrible mistake”.
