The young Swedish climate-activist Greta Thunberg posted on Twitter asking to be lifted back from the Atlantic due to a sudden change of venue of the COP25 climate summit from Santiago to Madrid. Greta Thunberg has refused to take air transport as it contributes to carbon emissions leading to climate change. In order to spread awareness among the global leaders, the climate activist chooses to travel by train, boat, and electric car and continue to do so when the new venue was announced.
COP25’s venue shifted to Spain
Greta Thunberg after attending the UN summit on Climate change travelled across the Atlantic for 14 days by sailing the boat. Later, she travelled by train and borrowed an electric car from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Initially, the COP25 summit was to be held in Chile. But due to violent anti-government protests, the venue was shifted to Spain. The United Nations made the announcement on November 1 considering favourable conditions in Spain for the event. According to international media, it is expected that 25,000 delegates will participate in the event.
Sudden change in venue presents a tough challenge for the delegates
According to the delegates, the sudden change in the venue considering only four weeks left for the event has raised serious concerns regarding the participation of the delegates coming from the Southern hemisphere. It is important for all the delegates to attend the event, in order to have a neutral voice on the climate change issue, else there will be a shift of power towards the wealthier countries said one of the delegates. This is for the second time the UN has faced difficulty in choosing the venue for the event. Initially, Brazil was hosting the event until Jair Bolsonaro took the office.
Reaction to Thunberg’s post
Thunberg’s post on social media received a mixed reaction. Some people extended their support while others suggested her to return to school and study more about air travel.
