Getting his point across in the ‘cheesiest’ way, Cosimo Cavallaro, an Italian-Canadian artist from New York is building a wall using blocks of Cotija cheese just a feet from the U.S.-Mexico border in Tecate, California as way of mocking and denouncing the waste represented by the barrier that American president Donald Trump wants to construct.

Cavallaro said that it was Trump’s demand that had given him the context and emotional impact to do this. Unlike Trump who wants to use billions of Dollars of taxpayer’s money to build his wall, Cavallaro is relying on GoFundMe to acquire enough blocks of expired cheese to lengthen the wall. The artist has currently set the crowdfunding goal at 300,000 dollars which will reportedly purchase enough spoiled cheese to make a 1,000 foot-long wall.

Originally from Montreal, he has also outlined his reason for the latest project on CheeseWall.com where he also offers cheese-branded merchandise and the progress of the project.

“I don’t like walls. So this is a wall that I can handle, this is a wall I can live with because this wall is perishable, it will not last. The cheese is spoiled. It just means that for the regulations it’s not to be consumed,” says Cavallaro on CheeseWall.com

“If you believe building the federal wall is a waste of our country’s resources, support this art wall to make a point,” reads the GoFundMe page.

He also said that he would be delighted to receive funds from Trump himself who made the promise of the border wall, which was the centrepiece of his 2016 election campaign.

"I can see the waste in this. It's a little bit of a waste to acknowledge a waste," the artist said of his project.

Apart from the political statement, the main objective of the sculptor and filmmaker is to convey the message of solidarity among people and find reason in absurdity.

This is not the first time that Mr Cavallaro has made art from perishable items. Previously, he made a figure of Jesus Christ made from chocolate and a bed of ham.

Donald Trump called a national emergency amid the U.S.-Mexican border crisis in February. He had previously ordered a federal government shutdown in December last year which was the longest U.S. government shutdown in history over a conflict regarding the funds for the wall.
