Houston hip-hop artists organize massive protest

Houston-area rappers Bun B and Trae tha Truth helped organize a rally in memory of George Floyd, a native of the city who died after a Minneapolis officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after he stopped moving and pleading for air.

Bun B said that this particular police-involved death of an unarmed black man has sparked a bigger movement, one that he hopes will lead to legislative change.

One half of UGK, which is considered to be one of southern rap's most iconic groups, Bun B said he decided to organize the June 2 rally for Floyd after a friend gave him the idea.

So, he called fellow rapper and Houston activist Trae tha Truth to organize a rally that included tens of thousands of marchers.Trae, who knew Floyd personally, has the same hopes that the march will be a catalyst for changes in police procedures and civil rights laws. Both artists say they're not confining their cause to just one demonstration and hope to commit resources to pursue further activism.
