ICC condemns US sanctions on prosecutor over probe into alleged war crimes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has condemned the economic sanctions on the Court's Prosecutor and a member of her office by the United States.

International Criminal Court has condemned ecomic sanctions on Court's Prosecutor and a member of her office by United States, saying new measures are ar attempt to interfere with Court's judicial and prosecutorial independence. United States imposed sanctions on ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda over investigation into alleged war crimes committed by US troops in Afghanistan. 

“ Court continues to stand firmly by its personnel and its mission of fighting impunity for world's most serious crimes under international law, independently and impartially, in accordance with its mandate,” statement re.

Pompeo reiterated on September 2 that ICC cant subject Americans to arrest, prosecution, and jail since United States is t a party to Rome Statute that created ICC. top diplomat accused international court of “politically-driven” targeting of US personnel, ding that ICC’s “recklessness” has forced Trump ministration to anunce sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals directly involved in initiating probe.

Sanctions under executive order

United States has also imposed sanctions on Phakiso Mochochoko, ICC’s He of Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division, under executive order signed by President Donald Trump in June. Pompeo claimed that sanctions reflect American commitment to “real justice and accountability.”

“Americans are proud to stand for truth and justice. We have intention of letting ICC’s illegitimate activities become a barrier to that pursuit,” State Secretary said in a statement.
