Injuries reported in stampede at Lil Wayne’s music festival

A crowd stampede injured several people attending a New Orleans festival organized by rapper Lil Wayne. Large portions of an audience estimated to include 15,000 people ran at least twice on Saturday night, causing injuries following Meek Mill’s performance at Lil WeezyAna Fest.

Times-Picayune/ New Orleans vocate reports police aren’t sure what caused disturbance but speculated that false rumors of gunfire or a fight could have prompted panic.

“My bror said to me and my cousin, ‘Run. Just run. I don’t kw what’s happening,’” local attorney Melanie Melasky said. “I turned around at one point to see what was happening, but everyone was running away.”

It wasn’t clear how many people were injured. newspaper reported fans kcked to ground and suffering cuts, scrapes and bruises. On-site medical staffers provided care.

A medical tent and concession stand near st were overrun, with medical tent left in tatters on ground. Sections of fencing were kcked over. Tables were overturned. And bever booths near main st were damd.

“I didn’t kw what was going on,” said George Krider, an employee of Bev Inc., catering company that operated drink booths at Lil WeezyAna Festival. “It was a stampede. first thing you think is, ‘Was it gunshots?’ I think it was a fight.”

Police officers stationed around site said shots were fired on festival grounds.

Some people looted during melee, stealing from cash registers and tip jars, concession workers said. Some festival attendees took bottles of liquor and or drinks when employees fearing for ir safety abandoned booths. After bever booths were initially overrun, and money and liquor taken, Krider said he and his fellow employees shut down booth.

“We salvd what we could,” he said.

first Lil WeezyAna Fest in 2015 coincided with 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and was intended in part as a celebration of city’s recovery.
