Kelly lauds McCain in maiden Senate speech

Arizona's freshman senator, Mark Kelly, paid tribute to the late Sen. John McCain in his maiden Senate floor speech Wednesday.  As he spoke, McCain's widow, Cindy McCain, looked on from the Senate gallery.

Arizona's freshman senator, Mark Kelly, paid tribute to late Sen. John McCain in his maiden Senate floor speech Wednesday.  As he spoke, McCain's widow, Cindy McCain, looked on from Senate gallery.

"He was a hero of young naval aviators like me, an example of how to serve your country horably and bravely, including in impossible circumstance of being shot down and captured," Kelly said.

"His legacy, it's something that cant be matched, but it's what inspires me serving in this Senate seat, and it's his example of bipartisanship, of independence that continues to demand more of us," he said.

Kelly is husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords, who suffered a severe brain injury when she was shot as she met with constituents at a shopping center in her district in early 2011.

Kelly defeated incumbent GOP Sen. Martha McSally last vember.

During his floor speech, Kelly also spoke about pandemic, his family background and infrastructure legislation that lawmakers are w considering.

"Arizonans sent me here to have ir backs, and that's what I intend to do," he said.
