Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her pride and excitement late Monday after securing the broad support needed to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. This milestone comes just one day after President Joe Biden announced he was suspending his re-election campaign and endorsed her.

The crucial moment for Harris came when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a motion at a virtual meeting of California's delegates to endorse the vice president. According to a spokesperson for Pelosi, this endorsement pushed Harris' campaign over the threshold needed for the nomination.

Earlier that evening, an Associated Press survey revealed that Harris had exceeded the 1,976 delegate mark required to clinch the Democratic nomination. While these delegates are not officially bound to her, the support indicates she is on track to easily secure the party's nomination.

In an emailed statement, Harris reflected on her campaign journey: "When I announced my campaign for president, it was my intention to 'earn' the nomination. Tonight, I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party's nominee, and as a daughter of California, I am proud that my home state's delegation helped put our campaign over the top."

Harris also expressed gratitude, saying, "I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon. I am grateful to President Biden and everyone in the Democratic Party who has already put their faith in me, and I look forward to taking our case directly to the American people."

As of now, it is unclear if Harris will pose a stronger challenge to Republican Presidential candiate Donald Trump
